Ireland Set to Lead Europe in Diesel Tax, with 54% of Cost to Be Tax Following October Budget; Petrol Tax to Reach Third Highest in EU

Dublin: Ireland is set to have the highest fuel taxes in Europe following October’s budget, according to Fuels for Ireland (FFI). Following recent and upcoming tax hikes, more than half the cost of petrol and diesel will be tax, with petrol taxes rising to 57.2% and diesel to 54%. This will make Ireland the EU leader in diesel tax and the third-highest in petrol tax.

FFI CEO Kevin McPartlan criticised the tax hikes as a “stealth tax,” warning of their significant financial burden on consumers and businesses, particularly in border regions. He called for the government to establish an expert group to develop a balanced energy policy that supports sustainable energy while keeping fuel affordable.

The recent increases in excise duty have already driven up fuel prices, with more hikes expected in October. The current price of petrol is around 184c per litre, while diesel is 176c per litre. The FFI urges a pause on further tax increases until the expert group can provide recommendations.
