Ireland’s Leaving Cert exam results will be announced today

Dublin: Over 60,000 students are set to receive their Leaving Certificate results today, marking the final year of pandemic-related grade inflation. The State Examinations Commission (SEC) will release the results at 10 a.m., with this year’s students benefiting from adjusted exams and post-marking adjustments (PMA) to align grades with recent years. This year’s adjustments resulted in 68% of grades increasing post-marking, compared to 71% in 2023 and 50% in 2022.

The adjustments varied, adding 12.1% to lower grades and 4.8% to higher ones. However, next year’s results are expected to decrease as part of a phased return to pre-pandemic standards. Currently, results are about seven percentage points higher than pre-COVID levels.

A total of 60,839 candidates are receiving their results, with 56,791 following the established Leaving Certificate program and 4,048 taking the Leaving Certificate Applied Program. Interest in new subjects continues to grow, with a 12% increase in students taking physical education and a 28% rise in those studying computer science.

Martin Sisk, interim chairperson of the SEC, congratulated the class of 2024, emphasising the fairness and transparency of the grading process. Education Minister Norma Foley and Taoiseach Simon Harris also praised the students for their resilience and hard work, acknowledging the challenges they faced during their studies. The Leaving Cert helpline will be available to support students from today until August 31st.
