Irish pharmacies began administering COVID-19 vaccine

DUBLIN: Irish pharmacists started administering COVID-19 vaccines from today, with over 1,000 pharmacies across the nation joining the vaccination program alongside the HSE this week.

People over the age of 50 who have not yet been vaccinated can now get a shot from their local pharmacy. Vaccine recipients should make appointments on pharmacists’ individual websites rather than through the HSE portal.

An estimated 140,000 people over the age of 50 have yet to receive their first dose of vaccine. People who have missed out on a vaccine or who have been unable to access to a vaccination center fall into this category.

Pharmacies will be administering one-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccines, and some mRNA vaccines may be made available later. People will be administered vaccine from a pharmacy room, and after receiving their shot, they must wait in the pharmacy for 15 minutes to see if they have any side effects.

Darragh O’Loughlin, chief executive of the Irish Pharmacy Union, said the move to include pharmacies in the vaccination programme will make it easier for people to get the vaccine.

Meanwhile, the HSE vaccine registration portal for people aged 30-39 is expected to open this week. The portal is currently open to anyone over the age of 40.
