Local Residents Petition High Court to Prevent Refugee Housing Development in Coolock

Dublin: Local residents have petitioned the High Court to block the redevelopment of the troubled site in Coolock, North Dublin, from being used for housing refugees. The petition aims to prevent the transformation of the former Crown Paint Factory warehouse, which has been designated as accommodation for Ukrainian refugees.

The petition is filed against Integration Minister Roderic O’Gorman, Dublin City Council, the Garda Chief Superintendent of Coolock, and Townbay Unlimited Company. The petitioners argue that the decision to repurpose the site for refugee housing is illegal and violates planning laws. Additionally, they claim that converting the site into refugee accommodation is unconstitutional.

Coolock has recently been described as a hotspot for public disturbances, adding to the concerns of local residents. The trial judge noted that some of the petitioners’ arguments were beyond the court’s jurisdiction. However, the judge acknowledged that the defendants raised certain issues in their application that warranted a formal response.
