One Dead, Two Missing After Ice Cave Collapse at Iceland Glacier

A partial collapse of an ice cave at the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier in southern Iceland has resulted in the death of at least one person and left two others missing. The incident occurred around 3 p.m. on Sunday, while a group of approximately 25 international tourists was exploring the ice caves. Four individuals were struck by falling ice, with two suffering serious injuries. One person died at the scene, and another was airlifted to a hospital in Reykjavik, reportedly in stable condition.

Rescue operations, involving helicopters and ground teams, continued into the evening but were suspended after dark due to hazardous conditions. Efforts to resume the search are planned for the morning. The terrain and ice conditions have made the operation challenging, with equipment transport and ice cutting primarily done by hand.

The tourists were part of an organised tour with a guide, and most were outside the cave when the collapse occurred. The glacier is located near the popular Jokulsarlon glacial lagoon. The incident is not believed to be related to a volcanic eruption in southeast Iceland, approximately 300 kilometres away.
