Surge in Violence Against Nurses and Healthcare Workers in Ireland

Dublin: Violence against nurses and other healthcare workers in Ireland is on the rise, with alarming new figures revealing over 7,300 incidents reported to the Health Service Executive (HSE) in the past 18 months. These incidents range from physical assaults to sexual harassment, with nurses being the primary targets, accounting for 4,420 of these reported cases.

Healthcare workers describe a worsening environment within hospitals, where spitting, threats, and physical assaults have become disturbingly common. Many have expressed frustration, noting that no amount of financial compensation can mitigate the psychological and emotional toll of such experiences.

The mounting pressure of work-related demands, compounded by these violent incidents, has left many in the healthcare sector feeling increasingly demoralised. In response, the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) has called for tougher penalties to be imposed on those who commit these acts of violence, urging that existing penalties be significantly increased to serve as a stronger deterrent.

The HSE has also reiterated its commitment to ensuring a safe workplace environment for all healthcare workers, recognising the need for immediate and effective measures to address this growing crisis.
