Taoiseach Simon Harris Proposes Examining Hot School Meals for Children Outside Term Time to Combat Holiday Hunger

Dublin: Taoiseach Simon Harris is considering extending the hot school meals program to cover school holidays in an effort to combat “holiday hunger” among children from disadvantaged families. Speaking at a Fine Gael event in Dublin, Harris highlighted that the child poverty unit in his department is exploring ways to continue providing nutritious meals to children even outside of the school term. He emphasised the importance of using the country’s financial surplus to support struggling families and hinted that this initiative could be part of a broader cost-of-living package in the upcoming Budget.

Harris also acknowledged the ongoing financial pressures faced by parents, businesses, and farmers, despite falling inflation rates. He reiterated the government’s commitment to providing further support through the Budget, which will include measures to assist small and medium enterprises (SMEs) as they navigate rising costs.

Addressing the wider economic context, Harris noted that while Ireland’s economy is performing well, it’s crucial to ensure that the benefits are shared with those who are struggling. He also hinted at potential measures to support Ireland’s SME sector.
