WHO Issues New Warning on Continued Spread of Mpox

Dublin: The World Health Organisation (WHO) has issued a new warning regarding the ongoing spread of mumps, with five cases reported in Ireland this year. In June alone, 934 new confirmed cases, including two in Ireland, and four deaths were reported across 26 countries. The WHO notes that these figures likely underestimate the true number of cases due to a decline in reporting.

Sixteen of the 26 countries saw an increase in cases compared to May 2024, with the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Spain experiencing the highest surges in their respective regions. Mpox, a viral infection previously known as monkeypox, spreads through close contact.

Common symptoms include a rash (88.5% of cases), fever (57.9%), and systemic or genital rash (54.8% and 49.5%, respectively). The rash typically evolves from raised spots to fluid-filled blisters, which eventually scab over and fall off. The incubation period is between five and 21 days, and there is no specific treatment for the infection.

Since the start of 2022, the countries with the most recorded cases are the US, Brazil, Spain, France, and Colombia. In Ireland, there have been 249 cases since the first was recorded in May 2022, with five reported so far in 2024.
